I used a good part of my holiday time to organize my diecasts. I bought some diecast display shelves and I could finally take my precious little cars off those awful carton boxes. I documented the process and now I share with you.
Look at the sheer size of that package, comparing to the wardrobe
To get a sense of the size, I put a VW Brasilia next to it
And after many layers of cardboard and plastic, I arrived at this
Yep. I never bought anything so well packaged. The piled up cardboard made a pile as high as my bed
I bought 4 shelves: Two shelves for 1/43 brazilian cars (with 26 spaces each) and two 1/64 shelves (one with 242 and the other with 60 spaces). I really needed those shelves, because my room was like this
And with many other Hot Wheels and Matchboxes stored in boxes. The shelves were also nicely packaged, with a very kind letter of the carpenter:
Mila's photobomb
After a family effort (three people working on this), we installed the 1/43 shelves on the living room, saving space for the third that I'll buy in the near future, to store the rest of the collection.
And after installing the 1/64 shelves, we could finally free the diecasts from their packaging. I did it with my father, who collects with me. It was so fun that we took something around three hours to do all this mess
But the results were nice. Some photos below were took by night, so they aren't so good
Those four in the corner were part of my 9th anniversary, I'll talk more about them later in the post
Those pics were taken in the next morning
And those are ONLY the muscle cars. I have many, many more Hot Wheels. I collect for 14 years, and I never stop buying more and more. I'll need much more shelves, and when I buy them I'll post here as also.
When we were searching through the boxes, I found my first 20 Matchboxes, and the 3 Hot Wheels I bought shortly after. Those diecasts have 14 years, and I received them as my 9 year birthday gift. I loved them so much that I decided to collect miniature cars. I photographed every one of those 23 miniatures, but I'll show the pics only in a next post...

Important edit: Many people are asking about the dimensions. I checked the manufactor's site and found the measures, if anyone wants to build some shelves. Since I'm brazilian, I can only give those measures in the metric system. And I also suggest that you make the spaces a little larger , because some Hot Wheels didn't fitted well. The Plymouth Superbird/Dodge Daytona for example, occupied every single angstrom of the available width.
The measures for the spaces are 8.5 cm (length) x 3.4 cm (height) x 4 cm (deep). My suggested measures are 8.6 cm (length) x 3.5 cm (height) x 4 cm (deep). These extra 0.1 cm in length and height are great to accomodate better slightly bigger models, like the cited Plymouth Superbird or a Chevy Impala. With the seller measures, the shelve is 100 cm (length) x 83 cm (heigth) x 6.5 cm (deep), made with 12mm plywood and with 2 mm acrylic doors.
I don't really know if those spaces can fit an even bigger model like a VW Drag Bus or a Thunder Roller. All I know is that I couldn't fit the Mars Rover Curiosity on the other one (with 60 spaces) I bought.
If someone builds it, please share with us!

This is my rec room floor Easter Morning. We do hot wheels instead of chocolate. It was decided long ago that finding a hot wheels after 2 years under something was preferable to Chocolate.

Welp....I'm done. My collection will never be as beautiful as this. Nice job!
Also, head over here for further diecast discussion:

It must be immensely satisfying to sort those cars all out by color.

And it is, indeed! Yesterday I resorted them, with an even smoother color transition, but I didn't take any photos...

I need this shelving setup for my 1:43s. Can you send me details on the shelves and where I can buy them?

That's what I need. It'd be so nice to get my loose cars out of storage.

I bought them in Brazil, and since they're quite heavy, I don't know if someone will be willing to pay the shipping costs...
1:64 shelves aren't hard to find on ebay ( http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_od… ), but I didn't managed to find 1:43 shelves.
They're very simple in construction, and maybe with some pictures and measures you could ask a carpenter to custom build it for you with a much better price!

I believe that is almost a nirvana. At least this was how I felt.

I can only photograph it next saturday, because I really want to take the pictures with sunlight. I didn't liked the pictures I took by night, so if you want nice colorful pictures wait for the next episode! :-)

Great post! You have soo many cars that I have never seen in the colors you have. Tons of great Fords I wish I had. Who made those cases?

I have cars Hot Wheels made between 2000 and now. And I like color variations, so I usually buy other colors of models I already have. Multiply this for 14 years and you'll have an idea of how many cars I have :-)
Remember, those are just the muscle cars. I have pickups, vans, sports cars, hot rods and much more, awaiting their cases.
I bought them from a carpenter in Curitiba (Brazil) who makes display cases for various types of collections. The shipping costs for abroad would be unreasonably high, but you can either find some cases on eBay (I searched for diecast display shelf/case/stand and found very nice cases with good prices) or ask a carpenter to build a case like this for you. Methinks the second option is better.
The construction is very simple. The "honeycomb" is a separate piece, made of thin sheets of plywood, with cuts to notch to each other. The outer box is made with a thicker wood, and it is fixed to the wall by two screws on the top corners. I don't recall the dimensions for the spaces, but I can measure it for you (and for everyone else) later.

Those are some beautiful shelves and I love the way you have them sorted by color. I bet it wouldn't be to hard to make if you could find the right materials. Now I'm going to have to check Lowe's or Home Depot and see if I can find something to make these. With shelves like that I would happily open every single hot wheel I have and display them proudly.

I would love to know what the dimensions are for inside squares of the hot wheels one.
